Bocca della Verità – Mouth of Truth
The Mouth of Truth is a huge marble mask, famous all over the world, whose legend tells that it could bite the hand of anyone who places it in its mouth.
The legendary large sculpture has a diameter of 1.75 meters and is dedicated to the God of the Sea, depicted with a bearded face and with pierced eyes, nose and mouth.

A husband who did not trust his wife took her to the Mouth of Truth to attest to his loyalty.
His wife reacted by pretending to pass out and the lover took her in his arms.
Immediately afterwards, the woman swore before the Mouth of Truth that she had only been in the arms of her husband and the man who had just held her up.
This is just one of the many legends concerning this famous sculpture which, despite the passing of the years and eras, continues to feed the curiosity of any visitor.
Where is the Mouth of Truth located?
The sculpture was located in the Piazza della Bocca della Verità until 1632, when it was walled in one of the walls of the pronaos of the nearby Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the place where it can still be visited today.
It is customary to see many people queuing near the famous sculpture, waiting to be able to photograph with their hand in his mouth.
