Francesco Totti – Captain

Francesco Totti – Captain (Rome, 27 September 1976) is a former Italian footballer, with the role of attacker or midfielder, world champion in 2006 and vice-champion of Europe in 2000 with the Italian national team.

Considered one of the best Italian players of all eras  as well as among the strongest in the world of his generation , during his professional career he has always played in Rome , a team of which he was captain from 1998 to 2017, for a total record of 19 seasons,  winning a championship (2000-2001), two Italian Super Cups (2001 and 2007) and two Italian Cups (2006- 2007 and 2007-2008).

Between 1998 and 2006 he was part of the Italian national team, with which he played two European Championships (Belgium-Netherlands 2000 and Portugal 2004) and as many World Championships (South Korea-Japan 2002 and Germany 2006), coming inserted in the ideal team of the 2000 European Championship and of the 2006 World Cup winner.  Previously, with the youth national teams, he had won the Under-21 European Championship in 1996 and the Mediterranean Games in 1997.

With 250 goals in Serie A, he is the player who has scored the most goals for the same team in the Italian top flight,  of which he is the second all-time scorer after Silvio Piola; with Roma he scored 307 goals in total, a record in Italy for a club team.  He is also the striker with the most appearances in Serie A (619, third player ever behind Gianluigi Buffon and Paolo Maldini), in which he is the only player, together with Maldini, to have taken part in 25 seasons and the only to have scored in 23 consecutive championships.  In the Champions League he holds the record as the oldest scorer in the history of the competition, having scored a goal at 38 years and 59 days.

Listed in the FIFA 100,  during his career he has achieved numerous international awards including the Golden Boot  as the best European scorer, the Golden Foot,  the UEFA President’s Award [18] and, first among Italian footballers, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards.  In a 2012 IFFHS research he was elected “Europe’s most popular footballer”. On a national level, he holds the record for awards ceremonies  as the best Italian AIC player.

Listed as one of the largest “flags” ever,  his latest appearances on national  and international  fields were greeted with ovations of admiration also by the opposing fans, worldwide.

Nicknamed Er Pupone,  Totti was born in Rome and raised in the Porta Metronia neighborhood.  His father Lorenzo, known as Enzo (1944-2020)  was a bank employee while his mother Fiorella a housekeeper and has an older brother, Riccardo. On June 19, 2005, he married showgirl Ilary Blasi , with whom he founded the Never Without You clothing line;  the couple has three children: Cristian, Chanel and Isabel.

In 2006 he participated, together with his wife, in the Italian dubbing of an episode of the television series The Simpsons.  In 2008 he appeared in the film The coach in the ball 2 and in the television drama I Cesaroni.

In May 2010 he presented in Rome, together with actor Russell Crowe, the special edition of the film The Gladiator, created by Universal Pictures in honor of the Roma football team, to celebrate the tenth year since the release of the film.
